Painting Images with Dyes.

ONE DAY WORKSHOP

This workshop is designed to teach students how to paint with thickened dyes on cotton to create wholecloth quilts. Among other things, we will cover blending, layering, special effects and painting without bleeding, with no resists. These techniques can be used to create painted tops from either your photographs or your original designs. Your line drawings can be traced directly from your photos before class so they can then be transfered onto the cloth in class. Your subjects could be portraits of people or animals, flowers, landscapes, and abstract or original designs. Students will leave with a painted top that can be quilted afterwards. This is a great way to learn this technique so you can then dye-paint your wholecloth quilt tops at home.

Students Are Asked To Bring:

  • Two or three 18" x 20" line drawings or designs (there will also be drawings on hand to choose from)

  • white synthetic round brushes used normally for acrylic / watercolor painting - U.S. sizes 0, 2, 4, 8, 12 (I will have enough brushes available for sale for all the students who prefer to buy them directly from me. The brushes I sell are specific to the type of work I will be teaching).

  • 4 large white plastic trash bags to put over and under your dyed pieces (please don't bring scented or textured trash bags!)
