Artist statement:
Nayra is holding her baby daughter Enyonvi. Most babies stay close to their mothers until they stop nursing when they are about two years old. Attachment parenting is the norm in West Africa. The mother and baby sleep together, and the mother carries her baby on her back everywhere she goes. This makes the babies calmer and the bond between the two even stronger. If a mother becomes pregnant again before the baby is two, she will often pass the first baby onto one of her daughters during the day, but her baby will still sleep with her during the night.
