Artist statement:
Adjua is selling textiles in her stall in the market. The African print fabrics are always sold in two-yard pieces, of which a woman will usually buy three at a time. One of the pieces will be used to make her a top, one piece will be worn around her waist as a skirt, and the third piece will be folded in half lengthwise and used as a second cloth to wear around her waist if she is married. Once the woman has a baby, the third cloth will be used to carry her baby on her back. The famous “Snugli” baby carrier was created by a volunteer in Togo, West Africa in 1968. She was struck by how peaceful the babies seemed because they were constantly carried on their mothers’ backs wrapped in the beautiful cloth.
