Our wetlands are in danger and we need to protect them. At least 22 states in the US have lost more than 50% of their original wetlands. When I look at the plants and trees that grow in these swamps, they seem very feminine to me. Wetlands, like women play an integral role in the well being of our society. This piece represents the fragility and the strength of them both.

From Stone was inspired by a trip to Australia in 2011. There is a beach near Brisbane that has moonlike rocks that create beautiful organic sculptures. My blue jean technique seemed to be the perfect means to recreate the natural beauty from that beach.

Artist Statement:
Inspiration comes from many different places. When my son came home with a series of photographs he had taken at an antique shop, I was immediately drawn to the lines and shapes within the images and wondered what would happen if they were abstracted. These pieces all evolved from seven photographs. The antiques were composed of cement, clay, metal and wood, all of which are rigid. Textiles are soft and flat. The simplification of the shapes seemed to create a rhythmic dancing flow that suited the cloth and was quite different than the harsh substances of the original objects.

Who is Watching Whom?

Materials: African cotton fabric, wool/polyester batting
Statement: Every time I opened the newspaper in early 2005, the eyes from the laser eye surgery ads seemed to look out at me. It made me think of being watched and how we all watch each other. Our world was not a happy place. The USA was holding the Earth in its hands which was a huge responsibility. We were being told that everything was going well and our country was in good shape, but a feeling of watching and waiting seemed to be behind those flowers.
