The Art of Color

Five Day Workshop

Class Description:

This is a workshop about understanding color. The more we know about color, the more personal color can become. By the end of this workshop, you will have the confidence to play with color values and combinations to give your quilts new life and new dimension.

Each day we will be doing challenging and eye-opening exercises using colored papers and Prismacolor pencils. There will be teacher presentations, group discussions, and self-reflection. This will help you access your own creativity through the experience of color. No fabrics, no sewing...just a party for your eyes.


Supplies students are asked to bring:
  • a set of 120 Prismacolor pencils (already sharpened!)
  • notebook and pencil for note-taking
  • white eraser
  • white photocopy paper (lots)
  • Paper scissors and fabric scissors
  • 17" clear ruler (like Omnigrid)
  • stick glue (both regular and restickable)
  • rubber cement
  • manual pencil sharpener
  • Ott light
  • construction paper (you will need 6 colors plus the white, the colors should be yellow, pink, orange, green, red, & purple or blue - 2 sheets of each)
  • your favorite book of paintings
  • 1 gallon size zip lock bag
  • 2 smaller zip lock bags
  • Polaroid camera (do not go out and buy one, but if you have one, bring it with a pack of film)
  • black construction paper (4 sheets)
  • a big hard-cover 3 ring notebook with lots of plastic envelope sheets/pages
  • a piece of fabric that you either love or hate but you have no idea how you to use

The Teacher Will Provide:
  • Color-Aid paper (each student will receive a 4 ½" x 6" box of 220 individual colors)
  • a $45.00 lab fee will be charged to cover the cost of the Color-Aid paper.

Classroom Requirements:
  • Table space with enough room for each student to work comfortably, (2 students per 8'X 2 1/2' table).
  • Three extra tables for demonstration and teacher's supplies.
  • Room must have adequate lighting and ventilation.
  • This class can be taught in a space without water facilities.
  • A 10' X 8' wall (or equivalent space) to hang class samples and example work. The Guild should provide some way to pin work on wall space (foam core, insulation boards, bulletin boards, etc.)
  • A queen or king size 100% cotton batting to hang work on.

  • Quilt stands

Fees:
  • Teaching Fee:
    • $750.00 per day (6-7 hours, limit 15 students)
    • lab fee $45.00
  • Travel Costs:
    • all travel costs including coach airfare, airport parking, tips, taxi, shuttle or other ground expenses
  • Food and Lodging:
    • all food and lodging must be provided
