Painting Images with Dyes

One or Two Day Workshop

This workshop is designed to teach students how to paint with Procion dyes on cotton. Learning to control the dyes will be emphasized. Among other things, we will cover blending, layering, special effects and painting without bleeding while using no resists. All of these techniques can be used to create images as complex as portraits or as simple as a line on a scarf. Each student is asked to bring two or three 18"x 20" designs or drawings that they will transfer onto cloth and then paint. These drawings can be as simple as drawings from a coloring book because we will mainly be concentrating on how to apply the dyes. Students will leave with a painted piece that could be worked into a vest, quilt or pillow top.

Quilt Line as the Third Design Aspect

One or Two Day Workshop

This is a process class that will help you find new ideas on how to use quilting to enhance the look of your quilt. We will be working on design, not technique. We would like to go further than just holding the three layers together with stitches. The main objective is to use quilting lines to create depth, texture, tension, or shadowing which give a new dimension to your quilt. Lines can be inspired by an endless variety of things (nature, architecture, technology, etc.) to add visual interest and reinforce the overall design of your quilt. Even straight lines can become a design in themselves. You will be working with the quilt tops you bring, which can be a traditional patchwork or a contemporary design. We will pin the quilt tops on the wall one after the other and discuss the possibilities of how to enhance what you like best and diminish what you like least in your quilts.

Dye-Paint Your Images/Bring Them to Life with Quilting

Three or Five Day Workshop

In this workshop, you will first learn how to paint images with Procion dyes on cotton. Learning to control the dyes will be emphasized. Among other things, we will cover blending, layering, special effects and painting without bleeding. All of these techniques can be used to create images as complex as portraits or as simple as a line on a scarf. Each student is asked to bring two or three 18"x 20" designs or drawings that they will transfer onto cloth and then paint. These drawings can be fruits or rounded objects, still lifes, animals or faces. Any image can be used as long as it has been made into an 18" X 20" black and white line drawing. It would also help to have an example or an idea of your color choices. In the second part of the workshop, we will explore new ideas about how to use quilting to enhance the look of your painted cloth. The main objective is to use quilting lines to create depth, texture, tension, or shadowing which will give a new dimension to your quilt. Lines can be inspired by an endless variety of things (nature, architecture, technology, etc.) to add visual interest and reinforce your overall design. Even straight lines can become a design in themselves. You will be working with the images you have painted during the first part of the workshop. This workshop is based on free-motion machine quilting but the design techniques can be adapted to hand quilting. Experience in one or the other is required.

Drawing to Increase Creativity I and II

Two 3 Day Workshops

This drawing class is a non-traditional course. It is designed to give confidence to all level drawers. What you will learn in this course can be used in all mediums of art. Learning the basics of drawing improves our art by teaching us to see the world around us. Drawing skills give us an understanding of composition and line, and help us to put depth in our work. The course is designed to be done in two 3-day sections with six to twelve months between each 3-day section. There are six lessons in each section.

Understanding Value to Enhance Color

Two Day Workshop

Understanding value is the beginning to understanding color. We will be doing exercises that are designed to get you to look at value instead of color so you can learn to differentiate between the two. We will be working with Prismacolor pencils and construction papers to learn to break down color into only high, medium and low values. The lessons will also touch on composition and design.

Following Your Passion/Marketing Your Strength

3 Hour Seminar

Becoming a successful professional in the field you love is everybody's dream. Our experiences have taught us that the passion we have for your work can also become our source of energy. In this 3 hour seminar, we will discuss how to combine your energy with practical marketing techniques to steer you way toward your career goal. Coming from an art background, my experience has helped me to use a different approach for selling my textile art. Based on this, we will talk about getting started, resources, presentation package, portfolio, photography, places to exhibit or sell your work, preparing for an exhibition, prices to help you get started, and the "art market" approach. Each participant will receive a folder with all the information that we cover in it. This folder can also be used as a reference to help you put together your own presentation package.
