Hollis Chatelain - Textile Artist

This is my monthly newsletter, here is what is happening this month

“Adobe Mosque” – In 1999 I made a piece depicting a village scene in San, Mali, West Africa. Many villages in Mali have been built around beautiful mosques where people gather, hold meetings, and sell things. The Mosques are usually very tall and provide shade and serenity.

For the first time, the American government has purchased art for a permanent collection in one of their overseas embassies. The American embassy in Bamako, Mali was chosen and Adobe Mosque click here  will be in this collection. This is very exciting for me because I lived in Bamako for three years and feel like Adobe Mosque is going home to hang in its rightful place.

The Cahoon Museum of American Art www.cahoonmuseum.org
in Cotuit, Massachusetts (Cape Cod) is hosting an exhibit called “Folks in Fiber” that will take place from March 28th – May 20th. My piece “Thirsty”
click here will be in this show along with works from about 50 other fiber artists.

Guggenheim Fellowship – In October 2005 I applied for a Guggenheim Fellowship. This working artist fellowship was to allow me to spend more time in my studio creating three large pieces for an exhibit that I am putting together that I hope will travel to museums, organizations, art centers, etc. to promote social awareness.

I was recently contacted and told that I was rejected. Over 2800 people applied and they accepted 187.

For a day or two, I felt down, but I know that regardless of whether I get a grant or not, the project will be done. We do have that pesky problem of making a living so it may take a bit longer to get the work finished for the exhibition, but both my husband and I believe that our world needs its artists to express themselves and try to plant seeds of change. So I will apply again this year (and next and next) and hope for the best.

My Latest - In the spring of 2002 I had a dream about world peace, the future of our children and what we are leaving to them. Archbishop Desmond Tutu was the leading personality in the scene and the dream was in purple.

In May of 2005, I had the honor of having a meeting with Archbishop Tutu to talk about the dream and the piece I wanted to make depicting it.

This is what I am working on now. It measures over 80 inches square and I hope to have it finished this year.

Teaching – In March I taught in Canmore, Canada at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Art Conference which was wonderful. This is a top quality conference that is very well run. Plus I love going to Canada because the quilters are great! From there I went to Glendale Quilt Guild in Burbank, California. Again, a great place to teach with motivated and talented quilters.

In April I will be going back to California to teach at the Empty Spools Seminars in Monterey. This seminar takes place at the Asilomar Conference Center which is a beautiful center right on the beach. I will be teaching a 5-day dye-painting/quilting class.click here
Then I will be going to Oregon to teach a 5-day color class.
