Hollis Chatelain - Textile Artist

This is my monthly newsletter, here is what is happening this month

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year!!!! 2007 was a year that was full of emotion, ups and downs, and craziness for many people. Let us hope that 2008 will be easier and bring peace, compassion and more tolerance to our beautiful but suffering planet.

You might see me on The CBS Sunday Morning Show this month! Their film crew came to the International Quilt Show in Houston last November and interviewed the winners and filmed the show. We are told that it will air this month.

Enclosed you will find the January newsletter. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

 My Latest

My “white piece”, as I have been calling it, is progressing. Click here to see an image of me painting it.  Click here  to see part of it quilted. The image is difficult to see without the quilting because the painting is so light. In my dream, part of the image was disappearing…as have many of the villages in the Darfur region of Sudan. It was surprising to dream in white and I tried to understand what the dream meant when I woke up. As time has passed, I’ve come to realize that not only does white represent death in many cultures, but this piece is about the genocide of a people. It will be part of the exhibit shown at Duke University in April.

Exhibiting

My exhibit at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in Boone, NC will be up for just a few more weeks.  “Antiques to Abstracts” can be seen until January 19th, 2008. These twelve pieces are inspired by photographs of antiques that my son took. Each one is made up of many small pieces of fabric that are sewn together and then quilted.

All of the work is for sale. Click here for more information, and click here to see the pieces.

We now have the final dates for the exhibit at Duke University next year.  “Hope For Our World” will take place from March 30 - April 14, 2008 in Duke’s beautiful chapel. Ten pieces promoting social awareness will be shown in the exhibit. Each piece is monochromatic and most are from my dreams. To see some of the pieces that will be there, click here

Duke will also be hosting a “day of activism” April 5th starting at 1:00 PM. Organizations working with the subject matters in my artwork will come to the chapel. These organizations will be there to educate the public and give them a means to help. Stay tuned for more information.

This exhibit will eventually travel throughout the country and will be called “Imagine Hope”. If you or your organization are interested in hosting this exhibit, click here

Teaching

This month I will be traveling to Hilton Head to teach at the Jinny Beyer’s seminar from January 28-30th. This is the second time I have taught at this top quality seminar located in such a beautiful setting. I’m thrilled to be going back. Click here for more information.

In February I will be going back to San Antonio to teach two classes of Drawing II.  click here for the contact person.

Fun Stuff

I have an African Gray parrot who spends a good deal of each day in my studio with me. Her name is Aku and she is bi-lingual. One day last month I was sorting my threads when my husband walked into the studio. He immediately said “Wait, I need to get the camera!” click here to see what he took.

Website

Check out the Art for Sale section of my website. I have finished a new piece called "Goddess of the Dance"You can also see all of the pieces from the  “Abstracts to Antiques” exhibit with more information about them.

We have giclee prints of “Hope For Our World” and "The Gift", the two winning quilts in Houston in 2007.

There are also prints available of “The Grandfather”, “Sahel”, "Ecuadorian Girls", "Precious Water", "Fatima’s Son", "School: It’s Never Too Late to Learn"," Nature’s Gift", "Blue Men",  "Burkinabe Mother" and "Untold Secrets", and they are all beautiful.  Click here  to check out all the prints and to learn more about giclee prints.

All of the threads that I designed for Superior Threads are for sale on the website. Living Colors and Nature Colors are sold in packs of 25 because I have found that quilters use threads in a more unique and exciting way when they have the opportunity to “audition” a number of different colors (just like we do with fabrics) before making their final choices. Click here

We have a secure system where you can order thread, fabric, prints and my artwork directly on line and pay by credit card or Pay Pal.
