Hollis Chatelain - Textile Artist

This is my monthly newsletter, here is what is happening this month

Dear Friends,

Spring has sprung! What a wonderful time of year. Our garden is coming alive again and we want to be out weeding, planting and mulching. But I am also working in the studio, trying to keep that balance of creativity, fun and work. Sometimes it is hard to separate the three since they cross over so easily.

Enclosed you will find the April newsletter (sorry it is a bit late – I’m still new at this). If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

Have a great month of May.
Hollis

Exhibiting - The Cahoon Museum of American Art www.cahoonmuseum.org in Cotuit, Massachusetts (Cape Cod) is hosting an exhibit called “Folks in Fiber” that will take place from March 28th – May 20th. My piece “Thirsty” is in this show along with works from about 50 other fiber artists.

My Latest - In the spring of 2002, I had a dream about world peace, the future of our children and what we are leaving to them. Archbishop Desmond Tutu was the leading personality in the scene and the dream was in purple. In May of 2005, I had the honor of having a meeting with Archbishop Tutu to talk about the dream and the piece I wanted to make depicting the dream. I am still painting this piece and here is a little glimpse of it: click here

Website – you may have noticed that we have updated the website. We now have a secure system where you can order thread, fabric, prints and my artwork directly on line and pay by credit card and Pay Pal. This has been long in the planning and I am thrilled that it has finally happened. We will also be offering new limited edition giclees of Fatima’s Son, School: It’s Never Too Late to Learn, and Nature’s Gift.

Teaching– In April I taught at the Empty Spools Seminars in Monterey, California. This seminar takes place at the Asilomar Conference Center which is a beautiful center right on the beach. It is one of my favorite places to teach because the students are motivated and the location is so special. I walked on the beach every morning and saw sea otters in the surf. Just outside my bedroom window was a family of woodpeckers that chased each other back and forth from tree to tree.

I also taught a 5-day color retreat at the Silver Falls Conference Center in Sublimity, Oregon. The group of 15 women came from many different states and we passed a week of new understanding and self-growth. Even though this is a class based on color theory, it introduces how important the emotion of color is in our work.

Silver Falls is quite isolated and totally silent (not even cell phone service!). We were extremely lucky with the beautiful weather. I had never been to that part of the country and seeing the sun shining behind the trees covered with thick green moss was a breath-taking gift of nature.
In May, I will be at home in my studio creating. Hopefully I will finish painting the Desmond Tutu piece.

The very beginning of June, I will be returning to the Berkeley area in California to teach a 3-day portraiture class. For more information: click here
